This course considers the background and development of Brethren doctrine in the Brethren movement generally and the Brethren Church specifically. Attention is given to the beginnings in Anabaptism and Pietism and to how Brethren doctrine has developed from the eighteenth century to the present. The main text traces the historical development of Brethren beliefs. The lectures, after providing a biblical and historical context, explore Brethren beliefs in topical order.
NOTE:
If you have enrolled in this class for the purpose of furthering your ordination process with the Brethren Church, please note that you are required to attend 8 of the 10 online cohort meetings. Detailed information regarding the cohort gatherings will be sent to all enrolled participants prior to the first cohort meeting.

Your Instructor
Brenda Colijn is an ordained elder in the Brethren Church and Professor Emerita of Biblical Interpretation and Theology at Ashland Theological Seminary. She serves on the pastoral staff of Smoky Row Brethren Church in Columbus, Ohio. She has published one book, Images of Salvation in the New Testament, as well as numerous papers and articles on Brethren theology and biblical interpretation.
